How Long Does It Take to Sell Gold in Arizona?
What to Expect Start to Finish
The most common misconception people have before their first visit to a gold buyer is that it will take a long time — filling out forms, waiting for appraisals, dealing with back-and-forth negotiation. In reality, most transactions at a focused precious metals buyer take 10 to 20 minutes. Here's exactly what happens.
The Typical Timeline: Walk-In to Cash in Hand
Minutes 1–2: Arrival and greeting. You walk in, tell us what you have. No appointment needed. If we're with another customer, the wait is typically under 5 minutes.
Minutes 2–10: Testing. We test each piece using an XRF analyzer — a handheld device that reads the metal composition in about 30 seconds per item without any damage to the piece. For a small collection (5–10 pieces), this takes 5–8 minutes. For a large estate collection (50+ pieces), it might take 30–45 minutes.
Minutes 10–12: Weighing and calculation. After testing, we weigh each piece on a calibrated scale. We calculate the offer using current live spot prices and the tested purity. This takes 2–3 minutes.
Minutes 12–15: Review and decision. We walk you through the offer — what each piece tested as, what it weighs, and how the number was calculated. You ask questions if you have them. You decide what to sell and what to keep. No pressure.
Minutes 15–20: Payment. We pay cash or check on the spot. Done.
What Can Make It Take Longer
Some situations extend the timeline:
- Large collections: 50+ pieces of jewelry plus a coin collection and flatware set can take 45–60 minutes for thorough testing. Bring it in a bag or box — we'll work through it systematically.
- Unusual items: If you have something we need to research (a specific watch reference, a potentially collectible coin, an unusual alloy), we may need 10–15 extra minutes.
- Busy times: Saturday afternoons are our busiest time. If you have a lot of items and want the most attention, come Monday–Thursday morning.
- Questions and learning: Many customers want to understand exactly what they have before deciding. We're happy to explain everything — it just adds time. Don't feel rushed to skip the education.
Do You Need an Appointment?
No. Walk-ins are welcome Monday–Saturday, 9am–5pm. For very large collections — multiple boxes, full estate contents, large coin collections — a quick call ahead lets us prepare and give you uninterrupted time: (623) 974-3772.
What to Bring
- Your items. Jewelry, coins, watches, flatware, dental gold, bars — anything gold, silver, or platinum.
- A valid ID. Arizona law requires us to record seller information for precious metals purchases. Driver's license or state ID is standard.
- That's it. No paperwork, no original receipts, no appraisals needed.
Should You Get Multiple Quotes?
It's a reasonable instinct, but in practice it rarely changes the outcome with a reputable buyer. Legitimate buyers all pay based on the same spot price and purity — there's no secret source for higher gold prices. The variation between reputable buyers is in the percentage of spot they offer, which typically ranges from 85–95%.
Where you see dramatic differences in offers is when you compare a reputable precious metals buyer to a pawn shop or mall kiosk. Pawn shops offer 40–60% of melt value because they're in the loan business, not the metals business. A dedicated gold buyer who pays 90% of spot will never be matched by a pawn shop, regardless of how many quotes you get from them.
If you want to do one comparison, compare us to one other dedicated gold buyer (not a pawn shop). That takes an extra 30 minutes and might save or cost you a few dollars on a small transaction. On a large collection, it might be worth doing.
How Long Until You're Paid?
Same-day payment, always. We pay cash or check at the end of the transaction. We don't hold items, don't mail checks, and don't require waiting periods. When you walk out, you have your money.

YML Refinery is located at 11115 Grand Ave #4, Youngtown — easy access from Phoenix, Peoria, and Surprise. Most customers from the northwest valley are in and out in under 20 minutes. East valley customers make the drive for large collections because the payout difference on $5,000+ in metals is worth the trip.
Open Monday–Saturday, 9am–5pm. No appointment needed.
FAQ
Can I sell without an ID?
No — Arizona law requires photo ID for all precious metals purchases. This protects everyone and is a sign of a legitimate buyer. Any buyer willing to purchase without ID is not operating legally.
What if I can't decide right away?
Take the assessment information with you and come back when you're ready. We'll re-test at current spot price when you return — we don't lock in today's price on items you're not ready to sell.
Do you buy on Sundays?
We're closed Sundays. Monday–Saturday, 9am–5pm.
