Sell Morgan Silver Dollars
in Arizona — Key Dates Welcome

Morgan dollars are one of the most collected U.S. coins — and one of the most frequently undervalued when sold. YML Refinery evaluates every Morgan by date, mintmark, and grade before making an offer. Common dates get spot-based silver value. Key dates get numismatic premiums.

Morgan Silver Dollar Basics

The Morgan dollar was minted from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921. Each coin contains 0.7734 troy ounces of pure silver in a 90% silver alloy. At current silver prices near $32/oz, a single common-date Morgan carries melt value of approximately $24–25.

But many Morgans are worth significantly more than their silver content. The key is knowing which dates and mint marks carry collector premiums — and having them properly evaluated before selling.

Common Dates vs. Key Dates

Common dates — like the 1878 8TF, 1881-S, 1885-O, 1896, and 1921 — were minted in large quantities. Circulated examples sell close to melt value. Uncirculated (MS) examples trade at premiums ranging from modest (MS-60) to substantial (MS-65+).

Key dates are low-mintage issues where collector demand pushes prices far above silver content:

  • 1893-S — the rarest business-strike Morgan. Even heavily worn examples sell for $3,000+
  • 1889-CC — Carson City key, $500+ in VG condition
  • 1895 — proof only (no business strikes confirmed), $20,000+ in any condition
  • 1884-S, 1892-S, 1893-O, 1893-CC — major semi-keys, significant premiums in any grade

We check every Morgan against current PCGS and NGC price guides and recent auction data. You will never walk out having sold a key date at melt value.

What Affects Value When Selling

Four factors determine what your Morgan dollars are worth:

  1. Date and mint mark — the most important factor. The mint mark is on the reverse above the "DO" in DOLLAR. P (Philadelphia, no mark), S (San Francisco), O (New Orleans), CC (Carson City), D (Denver, 1921 only).
  2. Grade/condition — Good (G-4) through Mint State (MS-60 to MS-70). Uncirculated coins command premium; heavily circulated coins sell near melt.
  3. Strike quality and luster — even among coins of the same date and grade, coins with full strike and original luster trade higher.
  4. Cleaning or damage — cleaned coins ("whizzed" or polished) lose significant collector premium but retain full silver value.

Selling a Morgan Dollar Collection in Arizona

If you have a collection — whether inherited, assembled over years, or purchased in an estate sale — bring the full set. Collections often contain a valuable date hidden among common ones. Many customers have walked in with a "bunch of old silver dollars" that included a key date worth hundreds or thousands.

We evaluate every coin individually, explain what each is worth, and make a single clear offer for the lot — or itemize by piece if you prefer. You decide what to sell. No pressure, no minimum.

YML Refinery serves Morgan dollar sellers from across the Phoenix metro: Phoenix, Scottsdale, Peoria, Surprise, and the northwest valley. Most customers are in and out in under 20 minutes for a standard collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common-date Morgans (1878–1904, 1921) in circulated condition are worth their silver melt value — approximately $20–25 at current prices (0.7734 troy oz × spot). Key dates like the 1889-CC, 1893-S, 1895, or high-grade examples command significant premiums above melt. We check every date and mintmark against current PCGS and NGC price guides before making an offer.

Key dates are low-mintage or high-demand dates that carry collector premiums far above silver melt. Major keys include 1893-S, 1889-CC, 1879-CC, 1884-S, and the proof-only 1895. Semi-keys — like the 1892-S, 1893-CC, and 1895-S — are also worth more than melt in any condition. Bring your full collection; we check every coin.

Yes. Even heavily worn, cleaned, or damaged Morgans contain 0.7734 troy oz of silver and are worth their melt value. The only exception is heavily altered or counterfeit coins, which we cannot buy. Cleaning reduces collector premium but does not eliminate silver value.
