Krugerrand Background

South Africa introduced the Krugerrand in 1967 as the first coin specifically designed for gold investment by the general public. Named after Paul Kruger (19th century Boer president) and "rand" (South African currency), it popularized the concept of government-issued gold bullion coins worldwide — prompting the U.S. to create the Gold Eagle in 1986.

The 1 oz Krugerrand contains exactly 1 troy oz of fine gold in a 22-karat (91.67%) alloy. The remaining 8.33% is copper, which gives the coin its distinctive warm orange-gold color. Fractional sizes (1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz) were introduced in 1980.

Krugerrand vs. Other Gold Coins

For selling purposes, Krugerrands trade at essentially the same price as Gold Eagles, Canadian Maple Leafs, Austrian Philharmonics, and other 1 oz gold bullion coins — because they all contain 1 troy oz of gold. The brand doesn't matter when the metal content is identical.

One minor difference: Maple Leafs are .9999 fine gold (24 karat) vs. Krugerrands' .9167 (22 karat). But the Krugerrand is slightly heavier to compensate, so the gold content is still exactly 1 troy oz. The payout is the same.

Yes. Both coins contain exactly 1 troy oz of gold (22 karat, same alloy composition). The Krugerrand and Gold Eagle trade at the same spot-based price from a precious metals buyer. The difference in face value ($50 for Eagles vs. no face value for Krugerrands) is irrelevant — both are priced by their gold content.

Yes. Krugerrands have been minted since 1967. All years trade at bullion prices — there are no major key dates with significant numismatic premiums in standard circulation strikes. The 1967–1969 early issues are sometimes sought by collectors but typically trade at bullion prices. Proof Krugerrands in original packaging may carry a modest premium.

Scratches and wear do not affect a Krugerrand's gold content. We pay full spot-based value on any Krugerrand regardless of surface condition. The coin's gold content is what it is — abrasion does not change the amount of gold inside.
