Sell Pre-1933 U.S. Gold Coins
Numismatic Premiums Paid on Key Dates

Pre-1933 U.S. gold coins are genuine antiques with both gold melt value and potential numismatic premium. YML Refinery evaluates every pre-1933 coin by date, mintmark, and condition — paying above melt for key dates and scarce issues. These are not "just gold" coins, and we don't treat them that way.

Why Pre-1933 Gold Coins Are Different

The U.S. government called in gold coins in 1933 under Executive Order 6102. Most pre-1933 gold was melted. What survived is now genuinely scarce antique currency — and some dates are extremely rare. Unlike modern bullion coins made in quantities of millions, pre-1933 issues were sometimes minted in quantities of a few thousand.

The result: many pre-1933 gold coins are worth more than their gold content — sometimes dramatically more. A $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle containing $3,100 in gold might sell for $4,000 in VF condition or $30,000+ if it's a low-mintage date in MS-64.

Gold Content by Denomination

Pre-1933 U.S. gold coins are 90% gold. Gold content by denomination:

  • $1 Gold — 0.04837 troy oz gold
  • $2.50 Quarter Eagle — 0.12094 troy oz gold
  • $5 Half Eagle — 0.24187 troy oz gold (~$774 melt at $3,200/oz)
  • $10 Eagle — 0.48375 troy oz gold (~$1,548 melt)
  • $20 Double Eagle — 0.96750 troy oz gold (~$3,096 melt)

These are minimums. Numismatic value — driven by date, mintmark, and grade — can multiply these figures significantly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pre-1933 U.S. gold coins carry at minimum their gold melt value. A $20 Double Eagle (0.9675 oz gold) is worth approximately $3,096 at $3,200/oz spot. But many pre-1933 coins are worth significantly more due to low mintage or collector demand. The 1927-D Double Eagle, 1879 $4 Stella, and 1907 High Relief are worth tens of thousands. We price every coin against current PCGS and NGC guides before offering melt.

We buy all pre-1933 U.S. gold denominations: $1 Gold (Type 1/2/3), $2.50 Quarter Eagle (Liberty Head, Indian Head), $3 Gold Piece, $4 Stella (proof), $5 Half Eagle (Liberty Head, Indian Head), $10 Eagle (Liberty Head, Indian Head), and $20 Double Eagle (Liberty Head, Saint-Gaudens). Foreign pre-1933 gold — British Sovereigns, French Roosters, Swiss Helvetia, Mexican Centenarios — also welcome.

Bring it in. We look up every date and mint mark combination against price guides before making an offer. You do not need to research this yourself. Notable keys include: 1879-O $20 Liberty, 1927-D $20 Saint-Gaudens, 1854-D $5 Liberty, 1909-O $5 Indian, 1911-D $2.50 Indian, 1796 $2.50 no stars — but there are dozens of semi-keys and scarce dates across all denominations.

For common-date pre-1933 gold, professional grading (PCGS or NGC) typically costs $50–$150 per coin and adds little to the sale price on a common date. For potentially key dates or high-grade examples, grading can substantially increase value — a difference of one grade point on a key date can mean thousands of dollars. We can advise you on whether grading makes sense for your specific coins before you decide.
