Peace Dollar Overview

The Peace dollar replaced the Morgan dollar design starting in 1921, commemorating the end of World War I. Sculptor Anthony de Francisci designed the obverse portrait of Lady Liberty and the reverse eagle at rest. The series ran through 1935 with a brief gap (1929–1933) during the Depression.

Like the Morgan, Peace dollars are 90% silver and contain 0.7734 troy oz of silver. They share the same melt value as Morgans but generally carry lower numismatic premiums — except for the 1921 high relief and a handful of scarce dates.

Dates and Mintmarks

Peace dollars were struck at three mints: Philadelphia (no mint mark), Denver (D), and San Francisco (S). The mint mark appears on the reverse at the base of the eagle's neck.

The 1928 Philadelphia has a mintage of only 360,649 — the lowest of any common Peace dollar — making it a semi-key worth $150–$500+ in most grades.

Frequently Asked Questions

All Peace dollars contain 0.7734 troy oz of silver (90% silver alloy), giving them a melt value of approximately $24–25 at current silver prices (~$32/oz). Common dates in circulated condition sell close to melt. Key and semi-key dates — especially the 1921 (first year, high relief), 1927-D, 1927-S, and 1934-S — command premiums in any condition.

The major key date is the 1921 Peace Dollar — minted only one year in high relief before the design was modified. It's worth $100–$300+ in most circulated grades. Semi-keys include 1927-D ($50–200+), 1927-S ($40–150+), 1934-S ($75–400+), and 1935-S ($30–100+). The never-released 1964-D Peace Dollar is mythic — none are known to exist in private hands.

It depends on the specific date. As a general rule, common-date Morgans and common-date Peace dollars trade at the same melt value. But Morgans have more numismatic depth — more key dates, more collector interest, and stronger premiums in high grades. Most collectors pay a slight premium for choice Morgans over equivalent Peace dollars in the same grade.

Yes. Any Peace dollar has silver value regardless of condition. Heavily worn "Good" grade Peace dollars (smooth fields, date and design visible) sell at melt. Higher grades earn premiums. We assess each coin individually.
